We are seeking a Senior Structural Engineer specialising in seismic retrofit to join Dizhur Consulting's professional team. The successful candidate will lead and manage seismic strengthening design and construction management of existing buildings.
This role demands extensive experience in seismic retrofit and strong collaboration skills. Specifically, the engineer will oversee the construction monitoring phase of an $80 million seismic upgrade project for one of New Zealand's most iconic heritage buildings.
Competencies required:
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, specialising in Structural Engineering.
- Chartered professional engineering status in New Zealand.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in structural engineering in New Zealand with a focus on working with existing buildings particularly with seismic retrofitting and construction monitoring.
- Proven track record in managing complex construction projects and working with major New Zealand contractors, ideally in existing buildings or structures with seismic vulnerabilities.
- Strong understanding of New Zealand seismic design standards and regulations.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to convey technical information effectively to diverse audiences.
- Proficiency in structural analysis software and familiarity with building information modelling (BIM) tools and construction monitoring software (e.g. Procore, Aconex).
- Proficiency in understanding project commercial aspects and consulting business operations
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- A valid NZ driver’s license.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct regular site visits to monitor construction activities and ensure compliance with project plans, specifications, and seismic design requirements.
- Review construction documents, drawings, and technical specifications to provide guidance and support to on-site teams.
- Collaborate closely with project managers, heritage architects, contractors, council representatives and other stakeholders to resolve technical issues and ensure project milestones are achieved.
- Perform structural evaluations during different phases of construction to verify adherence to seismic upgrade designs.
- Prepare detailed reports documenting construction progress, quality assurance observations, and any deviations from approved plans.
- Provide expert advice and recommendations on construction methods, materials, and techniques to optimise structural performance and seismic resilience.
- Participate in project meetings and communicate effectively with all project team members to ensure alignment on project goals and objectives.
- Uphold health, safety, and environmental standards on-site and promote a culture of safety awareness among all project participants.
